Water Hyacinth as a Problem in Waterways

Water hyacinth is known as a pest for its invasive nature, blocking multiple waterways that causes more problems in the community. From clogging waterways to damaging irrigation systems and causing floods, water hyacinth is really one of the most damaging aquatic plants. Not only does it cause flooding due to clogged-up waterways, but it also kills fish which then affects the livelihoods of fishermen.

 

Discovering the Potential of Water Hyacinth

In a quest to find an indigenous material that could be used for making different products, we came across water hyacinth. Various communities are greatly affected by this destructive plant and while the government has thought of addressing this problem by using this plant to make water hyacinth handicrafts, we thought it lacked something that could compete even with the international market. That was until we discovered that it can actually be used and marketed as a plant leather.

We collaborated with different local communities where water hyacinth is commonly found. People from different local communities help in harvesting and processing this plant which we can use for making sustainable products. We also collaborated with local artisans for the creation of beautiful plant leather goods because we aim to empower local communities through meaningful work.
