5 WAYS TO CELEBRATE PLASTIC-FREE JULY IN THE NEW NORMAL

5 WAYS TO CELEBRATE PLASTIC-FREE JULY IN THE NEW NORMAL

Times now are very different. Living in the new normal is now making us more cautious of the things we use everyday. The anxiety we get from physical contact with things is unexpected and unreal. We may often find ourselves disposing of almost everything we can get rid of. Whether it is some plastic bags, take-out containers or even an envelope that can be reused, the new normal may have made our daily lives less sustainable. But it’s not too late for us to make a change! We can always try to find ways to become more sustainable in these unprecedented times.

This month is Plastic Free July®.  It “is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution – so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities.” Plastic is known to be a non-sustainable material that massively harms our environment, most notably disposable plastic products. To combat this harmful environmental impact, Plastic Free July serves as a way for us to come together towards a more sustainable and healthy lifestyle.

Aside from the Plastic Free July initiative, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is another organization that talks about how 91% of all plastic is not recycled at all. They also mention how “Single-use plastics in particular—especially small items like straws, bags, and cutlery—are traditionally hard to recycle because they fall into the crevices of recycling machinery and therefore are often not accepted by recycling centers.” It is unfortunate that we continue to contribute to the dangers of single-use plastic, thereby it has become urgent more than ever to become aware of the consequences of our actions and persistently fight for the health of our planet.

Now that it’s July, this is now our calling to start finding different ways to live plastic free and avoid harming the environment. In this month of July, it has now become our calling to start finding ways to protect our environment by living plastic free.  Let us work together to do our own part in making a difference in the world and celebrating this month by following these 5 ways:

1. USE ECO-BAGS FOR ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING

Whether it is for groceries, transporting things, giving gifts, or just using it as an everyday bag. Eco-bags are the way to go! They are underrated and deserve more attention because they can give us a helping hand.

2. USE ECO FRIENDLY DOCUMENT HOLDERS

Sending over papers and documents has certainly become a challenge during this time of the pandemic. Transporting goods and items has faced its obstacles, becoming a struggle in the matter of logistics. With all the documents we need to send over and papers we need to keep, using a lot of plastic envelopes and other disposable types of envelopes is starting to be more common. With this, it is imperative that we start keeping our documents in a reusable, safe, and stylish case.

3. BRING YOUR OWN REUSABLE CONTAINERS, UTENSILS, STRAWS AND BOTTLES

It may have been more noticeable during this time that people are throwing away containers because they’re afraid to be in direct contact with their takeout and delivery packages. It may be better to eat our favorite food using our own reusable containers and utensils so that we feel more comfortable. Along with these, we can turn to metal straws and reusable bottles to refuse the use of single-use plastics. These plastic free alternatives not only allow us to eat and drink consciously, but to also live sustainably.

4. STAY SAFE WITH REUSABLE FACE MASKS, FACE SHIELDS AND PPE’S

Given the continuous spread of the coronavirus, it is important to be ready for the new normal with essentials such as face masks, face shields and PPE’s. The common type of essentials that people turn to are often disposable which certainly is unsustainable. We often feel bad whenever we throw away our masks after a single use. However, with J&L masks, shields and PPE’s, we are able to protect not just ourselves, but also the environment. The fact that we can still wash and clean these essentials, but at the same time protect ourselves, makes these products very worth it.

5. SHAMPOO BARS

Lastly, the sachet culture, evidenced by the purchase of haircare and body products in small quantities, have contributed to the usage of single use plastic. For those who have access to shampoo bars, which is a rising vogue product, now is the time to get your own. It is just like using shampoo but without the plastic packaging. The way you use soap can be the way you use shampoo!

Now that we have 5 different ways to celebrate Plastic Free July®, we can lead a plastic free lifestyle not just during the month of July, but also beyond.  As we adapt to these ways in our daily life, we are now invited to turn them into habits. Good habits go a long way with living plastic free. For us, it may feel small making simple adjustments. However, a small change can make a big difference if we do it together. Make plastic free living your own and join us in making the world a better place, not just for ourselves, but for the generations to come.
